At the 21st century dawned, the effects of climate change and the risk of depletion of fisheries resources are major challenges for humanity. The scientific community is at the forefront of this great battle of Humanity, in which INRH must fully assume its role.

The context and the fisheries problems have evolved a lot since its creation, passing from questions of prospection and development of new fisheries to valorization, conservation challenges to face overexploitation, safeguarding of biodiversity, understanding of the effects of climate change or sanitary safety of the marine environment. INRH is no longer only used to support the management of resources, but also to contribute to the development of sustainable investments in fisheries and aquaculture, or to contribute to the national health and zoo-sanitary control system essential for consumer protection of fishery products.

The diversity of INRH's fields of action and research areas is based, first and foremost, on a central organization based on four scientific departments for the coordination and national supervision of scientific activities.

Department of Fisheries : its role is to :

    • evaluate the fishery resources, diagnose the state of the stocks, determine their levels of biological exploitation and study the factors governing their evolution ;
    • Prepare all biological, technical or economic data necessary for the implementation of management plans.

Department of Marine Environmental Health: its role is to :

    • Ensure the monitoring of the safety of fishery and aquaculture products in their environment ;
    • Ensure the continuous surveillance of the marine coast and the various sources of pollution including chemical and microbiological, as well as nuisances that can unbalance the marine environment.

Oceanography Department: its role is to conduct studies and research in the field of oceanography along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of Morocco, aimed at deepening the knowledge on the marine environment and to better understand its effects on the dynamics of the fisheries resources.

Aquaculture Department: Its role is to conduct aquaculture engineering studies.
